This exists because it happened to me first

Every service page tells you it understands your problem. This one had it. What follows is the whole account, including the parts that took months and the part where the answer turned out to be something I had never knowingly chosen.

1The laptop

In 2023 I bought an Acer Predator Helios 16 from Amazon in the United States. It was mine, it was paid for, and for three years it did exactly what a laptop is supposed to do, which is to say I stopped thinking about it.

Somewhere in that time I set a supervisor password in the BIOS. I have no memory of doing it. That detail matters more than it sounds, and it comes back at the end.

2The lockout

In 2026 I decided to move off Windows and put Linux on it. That is an ordinary thing to want, and it needs one ordinary change: turn off Secure Boot in the firmware settings.

I pressed F2 and the machine asked me for a password.

I tried everything. Every password I have ever used, every variation, every combination I could think of. None of them worked, because none of them was it. And after three wrong attempts the firmware stopped asking and did something else instead: it wrote a file called code.txt to a USB stick.

3The dead end

That file is Acer's official answer. The idea is that you send it to Acer, Acer turns it into an unlock code with a key only they hold, and you type the code in. It is a sealed request, addressed to one recipient.

I spent a long time on it. I worked out what the file is, how it is put together, and what goes into it. I got far enough to say with confidence that it is a genuine dead end — not "hard", not "needs a better tool", but closed. Without Acer's private key, turning that file into a code is not a computing problem. It is arithmetic that does not have an answer in any useful amount of time.

I have written that up properly, because a lot of people are still being sold tools that claim otherwise: why no generator solves a code.txt. If your machine produces one of these files, every free generator you have found is for a different and much older lock.

The part that stings

The mechanism works exactly as designed. It is not broken and it was not defeated. It simply requires Acer to answer — and that turned out to be the assumption that failed.

4Three refusals

So I did the thing you are supposed to do. I asked Acer.

I opened a thread on Acer's support forum. I explained the situation, that I owned the machine, and that I had the file their own firmware had generated for this exact purpose. They refused, and the thread was closed.

I took it to Acer's authorised service centre in Jordan, where I live. They would not process it. The reason given was that it is not a Middle Eastern product — I had bought it from Amazon in the US, so as far as the regional service chain was concerned it was not their machine to help with.

I contacted Acer in the US. They told me the only route was to ship the laptop to them for service. From Jordan. For a forgotten password on a machine that was otherwise working perfectly, with proof of purchase in hand.

I want to be fair here: none of those people did anything wrong by their own rules. But the combined effect is that a mechanism Acer built specifically so that owners could recover their machines had no working path for an owner who could prove the machine was his. The challenge file is, in practice, useless.

5The only advice online

Every search led to the same conclusion, stated with total confidence on every repair forum: on newer Acer machines you cannot do this in software. You buy a chip reader, you open the laptop, you clip onto the chip, and if the layout is unlucky you desolder it. Some of the advice assumed soldering skill. All of it assumed opening a machine still under a warranty you would be voiding.

For a forgotten password. On a laptop that boots fine.

That consensus is not stupid — it is just older than the machines it is being applied to. It hardened into received wisdom and stopped being re-tested.

6Doing it anyway

So I went at the firmware itself, with a lot of help from AI tooling for the reverse engineering, and a lot of time.

The thing I was looking for is simple to state. Your BIOS cannot store your password — but it has to store something, because it has to recognise the password when you type it. Whatever that something is, it is on the machine already, and it is on the machine right now, whatever you have forgotten. It was never sent anywhere. Acer does not have it. It is sitting in your laptop.

I found how the firmware keeps it, how it checks what you type against it, and how to read it back out without writing anything to the machine. Then I worked backwards from it, on my own hardware, and recovered the password in plain text.

I typed it at the F2 prompt. It worked. Secure Boot went off, Linux went on, and the laptop became entirely mine again.

The password was one I had never chosen

It was a short run of digits. Not a phrase, not a date, not anything I recognise, and to this day I do not know where it came from — whether I set it during some first-boot flow without registering that I had, or it arrived some other way.

This is why I do not believe people who say they cannot remember. I could not remember either, and I was telling the truth, and no amount of trying harder was ever going to produce it. If you are being made to feel careless about this: you may well not have set it in any meaningful sense.

7Who runs this

One person, based in Jordan. This is not a company with a support department, and pretending otherwise would be the first dishonest thing on the site.

Reaching me goes to a real inbox that I read: [email protected]. If a reply is going to be slow, it is because there is one of me, not because you have been routed into a queue.

The service is the direct product of the work above. The same reading step I did on my own machine is what the download does on yours, and the recovery happens offline on my equipment. The reasoning, and where the method genuinely fails, is set out in evidence and limits — including the models that are only an inference rather than a result.

You do not pay unless it works. That is not generosity, it is the only honest way to price something that does not always succeed.

8What I will not do

Machines you do not own. Ownership evidence is asked for before anything starts, and it is refused without. The whole reason this exists is that an owner could not get into his own laptop; using it to get into someone else's would make it the thing I was complaining about. That is also why the tool is read-only and why nothing is ever written to your firmware.

Publish the method. There is a fair criticism here and I would rather name it than dodge it: keeping the specifics private is what makes this a paid service instead of a script. It is also the only thing preventing it from becoming a tool for exactly the people it should not serve. The trade-off is that you have to judge the service on its reasoning and its terms rather than on source code, which is why evidence and limits grades every claim by how well it is actually supported, and says outright which parts are guesses.

Sell you something that will not work. If your machine shows a number on the screen instead of writing a code.txt, the free generators solve it in seconds and you should go and use one. If it is an AMD machine, this method has nothing to try and I will tell you so rather than take your money. The free check exists to find that out at no cost, before anyone talks about payment.
